The opportunity

We currently have an exciting full-time, permanent opportunity for a Director, Business Development. The Director, Business Development is a senior executive responsible for driving sustainable, mission-aligned revenue growth across MODC’s social enterprise, fee-for-service programs, and related commercial initiatives. This role ensures that all revenue-generating activities are financially viable, scalable, and strategically aligned with MODC’s charitable mission.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Director will:
•    Lead the organization in evaluating, optimizing, and expanding commercial initiatives that support MODC’s mission.
•    Conduct comprehensive audits of existing programs and fee-for-service activities to inform strategic decisions and identify areas for growth.
•    Analyze market opportunities and emerging trends to develop scalable revenue streams aligned with MODC’s social impact goals.
•    Build strategic partnerships and alliances that create sustainable, long-term value.
•    Oversee operational integration to ensure revenue initiatives align with program delivery.
•    Build, mentor and manage a high-performing Business Development team, fostering accountability, innovation, and alignment with MODC’s mission.
•    Ensure that commercial initiatives are aligned with marketing, brand positioning, and communications strategies to maximize visibility and stakeholder engagement.
•    Provide actionable insights and present strategic recommendations and performance reports to the COO, the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), and, when called upon, the Board of Directors to inform decision-making and risk assessment.

The Director is a mission-driven leader who transforms business development into a strategically aligned, financially sustainable engine for social impact.

 

Responsibilities

Strategic Business Development & Revenue Growth

  • Collaborate with the Executive Directors of MODC’s two mission-focused areas—Community Support Services (CSS) and Skills Development & Employment (SDE)—and their respective leadership teams to develop and implement MODC’s 3-year commercial growth strategy.
  • Conduct a comprehensive audit of existing programs and fee-for-service activities, evaluating financial performance, operational efficiency, client outcomes, and mission alignment. Use findings to identify opportunities for optimization, scaling, or strategic repositioning.
  • Analyze market opportunities, including insurance, employer, school, government, and community sectors, to identify unmet needs, emerging trends, and potential revenue streams aligned with MODC’s mission.
  • Identify disruptive and emerging trends to inform long-term strategic growth and program innovation.
  • Prioritize revenue opportunities by financial impact, operational readiness, social mission alignment, and potential to support multi-year fundraising goals.
  • Design business models, pricing strategies, and value propositions informed by audit results, market insights, and strategic foresight.
  • Conduct market segmentation, competitor benchmarking, and opportunity sizing for both existing and new program areas.
  • Use insights from audits and market analysis to guide pilot program development, strategic partnerships, and resource allocation decisions.

 

Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Cultivate and manage long-term relationships with insurers, employers, school boards, government agencies, and community organizations.
  • Represent MODC in sector forums, conferences, and networks to enhance brand recognition, influence policy priorities, and identify funding opportunities.
  • Partner with operational leaders in CSS and SDE to ensure organizational readiness for new programs and initiatives by:
    • Aligning resources, staffing, workflows, and technology systems to support scalable program delivery
    • Integrating insights from program audits and market opportunity analyses to inform planning and prioritization
    • Establishing operational protocols, KPIs, and performance metrics to monitor effectiveness and impact
    • Coordinating cross-functional teams across Finance, CRM/ERP, Marketing, and program leadership to ensure seamless implementation
    • Ensuring compliance, risk mitigation, and alignment with MODC’s mission and social impact goals

 

Program Innovation & Pilot Development

  • Launch new initiatives informed by audits of existing programs and market opportunity analysis, ensuring pilots address gaps and capitalize on high-potential areas.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and stakeholders to design, launch, and monitor pilot programs validated against market demand, social impact, and financial performance metrics.
  • Conduct feasibility assessments and identify potential risks to ensure successful pilot execution.
  • Continuously optimize programs through data-driven insights to ensure scalability, sustainability, and alignment with MODC’s mission.
  • Document pilot outcomes, share learnings, and provide recommendations to leadership to inform broader program strategy and decision-making.

 

Financial Oversight & Operational Enablement

  • Utilize Salesforce CRM to manage pipeline, track opportunities, and forecast revenue.
  • Collaborate with ERP and Finance teams to integrate insights from program audits into budget creation, ongoing forecasting, and contribution margin analysis.
  • Build and maintain budgets that align with strategic priorities and ensure resources are allocated effectively.
  • Ensure commercial activities comply with financial, operational, and regulatory standards.

 

Risk Management & Operational Alignment

  • Proactively identify and address risks related to capacity, market adoption, pricing, and operational readiness, prioritizing high-impact areas for immediate attention.
  • Partner with the COO, CSS/SDE leadership, Finance teams, and operational staff to guide regular governance discussions, ensuring alignment, transparency, and informed decision-making across the organization.
  • Monitor risks continuously, track key performance indicators, and adjust mitigation strategies to maintain operational effectiveness.
  • Integrate risk insights into strategic planning and decision-making, ensuring that operational and financial considerations support organizational goals.
  • Capture lessons learned and recommended process improvements to strengthen future risk management and operational alignment.

 

Team Leadership & Development

  • Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-performing Business Development team.
  • Foster an inclusive and collaborative work environment reflecting MODC’s commitment to diversity, equity, and accessibility.
  • Promote professional development, aligning team performance with strategic goals.
  • Partner with the Chief People Officer to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion practices across all revenue initiatives.

 

Governance & Reporting

  • Provide transparent reporting on revenue performance, pipeline growth, and strategic insights to the COO and ELT.
  • Advise on strategic decisions for program expansions, pricing, and scaling initiatives.
  • Conduct structured quarterly governance reviews to monitor performance, risk, and opportunities identified through audits and market assessments.

Present key findings, recommendations, and strategic initiatives to the Board of Directors when called upon, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and accountability standards

 

Qualifications and experience

Experience:

  • 8–10+ years in business development, social enterprise, or revenue management, ideally within the not-for-profit, social purpose, or health services sectors.
  • Proven success scaling fee-for-service programs, social enterprises, or related commercial activities.
  • Track record of developing strategic partnerships with insurers, employers, school boards, government, and community organizations.
  • Strong financial acumen, including revenue modelling, margin analysis, and forecasting.
  • Leadership experience managing cross-functional teams, guiding organizational transformation, and collaborating with operational divisions.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Social Enterprise, Public Administration, Healthcare Management, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Professional certifications in business development, social enterprise, or nonprofit management are an asset.

 

Important Details

  • Hybrid work arrangement with 3 days in our National Office at 99 Duncan Mill Road, Toronto, ON

  • Travel as needed 

Salary:   $128,000 to $142, 000 per annum
